Police Certificate (Keisatsu Shomei)

The Police Certificate reports whether you have a criminal record for the duration lived in Japan. Non-Japanese citizens may apply as well.
Required Documents

There is no fee.
Additional Information
- The applicant must appear in person to apply.
- You must use the Fingerprint Form provided by our office. Other formats cannot be accepted.
- You will need to get the forms first and then get fingerprint services done outside of our office. Please give yourself ample time to apply.
- Processing times are usually 2~3 months.
- The Police Certificate can only be submitted to foreign government institutions. We cannot issue the certificate for personal or private enterprises. There are also limitations placed on what this certificate can be used for, such as obtaining citizenship, permanent residence, and work permits. Depending on the purpose of your application, you may be required to submit additional documents or may not qualify to apply.
- If the Registered Domicile (Honseki-chi) on your passport has changed, you will need to provide a Family Registry (Koseki Tohon or Koseki Shohon) that reflects the new information.
- If you had a name change due to marriage and you do not have time to make a new passport, you may request your new name on the Police Certificate by bringing additional documents such as a Marriage Certificate.
- If you had a change in citizenship since the time you lived in Japan, you will need to apply with your current passport and bring the passport that was valid during your stay in Japan.
