U.S. Citizens

2021/3/24
Important Notice The operation of consular services including window hours and visa exemptions for U.S. passport holders has changed, effective November 16, 2020. Please click here for more information.

In order to reduce cross-border travels as much as possible, please consider postponing the travel to Japan during this period, unless it is truly urgent.

While the Visa exemption measure to U.S. citizens has NOT been suspended, those U.S. citizens who intend to newly enter Japan without a proper entry visa will, in principle, be subject to “Denial of Permission to Enter.”

  • A visa is not required for U.S. passport holders who wish to stay in Japan up to 90 days for the purpose of non-paid activities such as sightseeing, visiting relatives or friends, business meetings, amateur participation in athletic meetings, attending a conference, etc.
  • If you wish to enter Japan for long term stay or for paid activities, you must apply for an appropriate visa. See Work/Long Term Stay
  • No visa fee is required for U.S. citizens
