Yonsei Basketball Assoc. Receives Foreign Minister's Commendations

On Thursday, August 4, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the recipients of the Foreign Minister’s Commendations for 2022. Within the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles, Southern California’s own Yonsei Basketball Association will receive commendations for their contributions to the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.
Since the establishment of the Yonsei Basketball Association in 1993, it has offered “Yonsei” (4th generation Japanese Americans) youth opportunities to interact with their Japanese peers through basketball, while simultaneously helping to teach them about Japan and its culture. Up until today, 600 young players from Southern California have visited Japan under this program, while 600 youth athletes from Japan visited Southern California. Through interactions by younger generations through sports, the association has greatly contributed to the Japan-US friendship and cultural exchange.
The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and organizations with outstanding achievements in the international field, to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries. The Commendations also aim to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public towards the activities of recipients.
