His Majesty the Emperor’s Birthday Celebration Reception

The Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles held His Majesty the Emperor’s Birthday Celebration Reception on Feb. 27 at the Official Residence of the Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles. Representatives of local governments including elected officials from within the Consulate’s service area such as Los Angeles County and beyond, and guests with ties to Japan attended the reception.
Following performances of the national anthems of Japan and the United States, Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles Kenko Sone delivered remarks. The event also featured the presentation of a commendation from the City of Los Angeles and a toast by Japanese Business Association of Southern California (JBA) President Akira Minamiura.
At the reception, guests enjoyed a koto performance and ikebana flower exhibit, as well as promotional booths showcasing Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan; investment opportunities in Japan; inbound tourism; and Japanese disaster prevention technology. Also, regional governments set up displays to highlight their unique attractions, fostering deeper ties between Japan and the U.S. in various ways.
Furthermore, in recognition of the inscription of “Traditional knowledge and skills of sake-making with koji mold in Japan” on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2024, the event featured sake tasting presented by Japanese food and beverage companies. Local Japanese food businesses and restaurants, including those in Little Tokyo and other parts of the Consulate’s service area, offered Japanese cuisine to guests.
