Crete Academy Follows Trip to Japan with visit to Consulate General, JANM, and JACCC

2024/8/6
In a first of its kind, the Consulate General, the Japanese American National Museum, and the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center partnered to welcome elementary and middle school students on a half day tour of things Japanese. Eight students from Crete Academy in South Los Angeles and two chaperones visited each location and Little Tokyo on July 31.

The students had had in March the amazing experience of visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Their summertime trek on Wednesday to downtown was meant to keep fresh their memories, build on their knowledge of Japanese culture and make connections with nearby Japanese American communities.

The program included hearing about Tanabata and other Japanese holidays at the Japan Information and Culture Center library, reflecting on the JANM’s thought-provoking exhibition in its Gallery, spotting fun stores in Little Tokyo Village, encountering the impressive Isamu Noguchi Plaza, and finally taking up brush and ink at the Nippon Shodō Center at the JACCC!
