Flavors from Okinawa: Nature's Gift on Your Plate

On June 12, Deputy Consul General Aoshima participated in “Flavors from Okinawa: Nature's Gift on Your Plate,” a promotional event for Okinawan products held at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles. This event was organized by Okinawa Prefecture in cooperation with the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles, JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, and the JETRO Los Angeles office. Five companies from Okinawa Prefecture visited the event together with Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki to promote Okinawan food products, which they cited as one of the secrets to the health and longevity of the Okinawan people.
After a video message by Ms. Yuko Kaifu, President of JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, Deputy Consul General Naoshige Aoshima highlighted the charm of Okinawa, which impresses visitors with its food culture, nature, and people. He hoped that everyone would enjoy the opportunity to try food prepared with Okinawan ingredients and experience the charm of Okinawa.
Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki presented on the culture of Okinawa Prefecture and the “secret of longevity” of its people, followed by presentations from Okinawan businesses on the secrets to the health and longevity of the Okinawan people, including black sugar, “sodeika” (diamond squid), “mozuku” (seaweed), “shikuwasa” (citrus fruit), “beni imo” (purple sweet potato), sea grapes (seaweed), Orion beer, and “awamori” (distilled spirit). After the introduction of the ingredients, participants were served dishes made with the Okinawan ingredients and enjoyed them with “awamori” and Orion beer.
