Premium Sake Seminar and Tasting with Kochi Prefecture and Other Regions
2025/1/27
On January 27, Consul General Sone and Mrs. Sone joined an event featuring a seminar and tasting of sake, mainly from Kochi Prefecture, hosted by the Takamatsu Regional Taxation Bureau and Kochi Prefecture at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles. Many wholesalers and retailers who handle alcoholic beverages in the Los Angeles region joined the event.
In his opening remarks, Consul General Sone celebrated traditional sake brewing being registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage on December 5, 2024, following the registration of “washoku”, traditional Japanese cuisine, in 2013. He hoped that the registration will help spread awareness of sake brewing techniques in Japan and lead to increased global interest in Japanese sake products.
The event was divided into two parts: the first part, a seminar on Japanese sake, was held at the Michelin-starred restaurant UKA, while the second part, a tasting and pairing, was held at the 5th floor salon of JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles.
In the first part of the seminar, Consul General Sone gave an opening speech, followed by introductions and presentations about sake from Mutual Trading and Wismettac Asian Foods, two Japanese food trading companies. Dr. Uehigashi from Kochi Prefectural Industrial Technology gave a lecture on the characteristics of “tosa sake” (a local Kochi sake) and research and development of yeast while participants experienced the sake tasting.
The second part of event featured sake pairing where UKA chefs offered suggestions on how to taste sake and on the types of food to pair sake with.
