Japanese Immersion Education Networking & Reception

2026/9/30
On September 24, the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles hosted the “Japanese Immersion Education Networking & Reception” at the Official Residence of the Consul General, with the aim of supporting the continued development of Japanese-language immersion education and strengthening collaboration among stakeholders across Southern California.

Japanese-language immersion education is a form of bilingual education in which students learn at least 50% of their regular U.S. curriculum, such as math and science, in Japanese. In Southern California, four public elementary schools, including kindergarten programs, offer Japanese-language immersion education in Culver City, Gardena, and Glendale.

At the reception, the four school principals shared the current state, challenges, and benefits of Japanese-language immersion education, followed by a panel discussion.

The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including principals and educators from immersion schools, school board presidents and superintendents from the respective school districts, private supplementary and heritage language schools, Japanese-language education professionals, sister city associations, the Japanese American National Museum (JANM), and Japanese-language textbook publishers.

The reception provided a valuable opportunity to deepen connections, exchange perspectives, and explore new avenues for collaboration.

The Consulate General will continue to foster this network and support the further development of Japanese-language education throughout Southern California.
