Taste of Home/International Comfort Food
2025/2/11
On February 11, Consul General Sone and Mrs. Sone attended the “Taste of Home | International Comfort Food” event held at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles and sponsored by MUFG. The event explored the memories and stories behind “comfort food” loved in various countries, and participants connected with each other through traditional cuisine from Japan, Brazil, and Morocco.
In his opening remarks, Consul General Sone noted that during the wildfires in Los Angeles in January, firefighters and other volunteers saved lives and brought peace of mind to those affected, and highlighted the important role of food as a means to find comfort. He also stated that “comfort food”, the theme of this event, is a way to learn more about a country's culture and to deepen mutual understanding by eating together with its people. The funds raised from ticket sales supported the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation, which, in turn, will contribute to the ongoing efforts of the dedicated LAFD firefighters who safeguard the Los Angeles communities impacted by the wildfires.
Comfort food from Morocco, Brazil, and Japan were served at the event, with chefs from each country introducing their country's culinary culture and offerings. Participants enjoyed takoyaki (octopus balls), karaage (Japanese fried chicken), edamame (soybeans), onigiri (rice balls), and taiyaki (fish-shaped cake) from Japan; couscous, tagine, mint tea, and Moroccan baklava from Morocco; croquettes, feijoada, passion fruit mousse, and caipirinha from Brazil.
