2023 Foreign Minister’s Commendation Honoring Mrs. Sadako Oehler

On Aug. 16, 2023 (Japan Standard Time), the Government of Japan announced the recipients of its 2023 Foreign Minister’s Commendation. From the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles, Mrs. Sadako Oehler was awarded.
On Monday, Oct. 30, Mrs. Oehler was presented the Foreign Minister’s Commendation.
The Foreign Minister's Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups of outstanding achievements in international fields, to acknowledge their contribution to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries. The Commendation also aims to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for their activities.
Following are Mrs. Oehler’s profile and contributions leading to her being awarded the Foreign Minister’s Commendation:
Mrs. Oehler was a founding member of the Ikenobo Ikebana San Diego Chapter who served 47 years as inaugural president and facilitated growth and development of Ikebana flower arrangement as an instructor. The Ikenobo Ikebana San Diego chapter commemorated its 25th anniversary by successfully welcoming the Ikenobo School of Ikebana Headmaster from Kyoto, who appointed Mrs. Oehler the highest instructor ranking of Headmaster Karoshoku “Junkaroho.” She was also one of the participants for the San Diego Museum of Art’s very first Art Alive floral exhibition in 1981 and continued to participate regularly since that time. This year, Mrs. Oehler was named Art Alive 2023 Featured Legacy Designer and honored with a special gallery space tribute.
Mrs. Oehler has been awarded the Foreign Minister’s Commendation in recognition of her contribution to mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the U.S. through promotion of cultural arts and other activities.
