Conferment Ceremony of Foreign Minister’s Commendation for Mr. David Tuites

On Aug. 16, 2023 (Japan Standard Time), the Government of Japan announced the recipients of its 2023 Foreign Minister’s Commendation. From the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles, Mr. David Tuites was awarded.
On Saturday, February 17, 2024, Mr. Tuites was presented the Foreign Minister’s Commendation.
The Foreign Minister's Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups of outstanding achievements in international fields, to acknowledge their contribution to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries. The Commendation also aims to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for their activities.
Following are Mr. Tuites‘ s contributions leading to him being awarded the Foreign Minister’s Commendation:
Mr. Tuites became the executive director of the Japan Society of San Diego & Tijuana in 2005, and then the association's president in 2008. Since then, he has worked to promote friendly relationships between Japan and United States in San Diego for 18 years. His accomplishments include organizing the Annual Leadership Awards in San Diego to honor Japan-related leaders located in San Diego. The Awards have contributed an increase of awareness of Japanese companies and organizations in the U.S.
Mr. Tuites successfully launched The Japan U.S. Military Program (commonly known as JUMP) with the cooperation of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA, the Embassy of Japan in the United States, and the National Association of Japan-America Societies in 2015. This program is for connecting Self-Defense Forces personnel who visit San Diego with active and retired U.S. military personnel as well as other residents of San Diego.
Furthermore, Mr. Tuites started the "Japanese Culture and Academic Proficiency” (commonly known as J-CAP) event, in which students studying Japanese compete with their Japanese knowledge and communication skills. The event was held every year without interruption from 2008 until the time of the coronavirus pandemic and grew to partner with San Diego State University.
Mr. Tuites has made significant contributions to promoting understanding of Japan in San Diego and strengthening friendly relations between Japan and the United States.
