Webinar on "The New Age of Elder Care: Advancements in the Science of Aging"

On Wednesday, February 17, 2021, JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles and Japan America Society of Southern California, co-presented “The New Age of Elder Care,” a new webinar focusing on the latest AI technology and psychosocial care methods that can physically and mentally empower the older adult population. 

Following the opening statements by Deputy Consul General Kouichi Nakagawa and JASSC Chairman Douglas Montgomery, the three speakers presented their research findings and practices.  

Dr. Yoshiyuki Sankai (President & CEO, CYBERDYNE Inc.) discussed "Cybernic" systems, how humans and technology can co-exist, and presented how his company's invention, cyborg HAL can help elderly as well as caregivers. He also explained Cybernic Cloud System which enables to keep track of patient health conditions as well as to connect between patients and physicians virtually.   

Dr. Takanori Shibata (Chief Senior Research Scientist, National Institute of Advanced Science and Technology) presented PARO, the therapeutic seal robot, to Improve anxiety, depression, pain, and loneliness for prescribed non-pharmacological therapy, showing his research findings of biofeedback therapy with PARO for elderly. PARO, currently 9th generation available, is now used in more than 30 countries.  

Mrs. Shiori Lange, LCSW (Psychotherapist & Geriatric Medical Social Worker) discussed geriatric mental health trends in the U.S. as well as its challenges and intervention.  

Following the speaker presentations, a panel discussion was led by the moderator Dr. Lené Levy-Storms (Associate Professor at Department of Social Welfare in the Luskin School of Public Affairs and Medicine/Geriatrics in the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA).
