Foreign Policy Expert Dr. Narushige Michishita Lectures in Southern California

Dr. Narushige Michishita, professor of strategic studies and foreign policy at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Tokyo, Japan came to Southern California in mid-October as part of a lecture series presented by the Prime Minister’s Office of Japan. His visit took him to speaking engagements at different cities along the U.S. West Coast.

 

His first talk, held at the University of California, San Diego’s School of Global Policy & Strategy, explored “Japan’s Evolving Security Assessments of China and North Korea and its Impact on Japan’s Security Posture.” The audience, which included professors, graduate students, undergraduates and the general public, engaged with Dr. Michishita, asking many questions during and after his talk. Next, he met with a smaller group of professors and graduate students to continue the conversation.

 

The following day, Dr. Michishita went to Santa Monica, California for an event hosted by the RAND Corporation, attended by RAND researchers and Pardee Graduate School students, where he spoke about the U.S.-Japan alliance and the defense of South Korea.

 

Next, Dr. Michishita spoke at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles. His talk was entitled “Four Future Scenarios for North Korea: What Are Implications for the United States and Japan, and How Should We Respond?” He offered a wide a range of scenarios corresponding to different possible détente between the U.S. and North Korea, along with analyses of potential resulting implications for Japan and the U.S.
