The 18th Annual San Diego Japanese Speech Contest was held on March 22, 2015 at Carlsbad Public Library Auditorium with the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles as a co-host. High school, university, and community college students from the San Diego area gathered to demonstrate their Japanese language talents in roughly 4 minute-long speeches, followed by a Q & A session with the judges. This rigorous contest aims to promote Japanese language study, as well as mutual understanding and connections between Japan and the United States.

New to the contest this year, the 1st place winner amongst college level contestants received a prize trip to Japan including a homestay and study experience at Niigata Seiryou University. Winners of the contest placing 3rd or above are also eligible to participate in a national Japanese language contest, and they received prizes for their substantial work towards mastering the Japanese language. This year 22 competitors and approximately 150 guests joined in the event.

Consul Wajima from the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles assisted as a judge during the contest and provided closing remarks. The Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles also distributed JET Program and MEXT Scholarship pamphlets at the venue.
