The Japanese Language School Unified System Rengo “Combined” Speech Contest (Elementary Division (64th) Jr./Sr. High School Division (28th)), co-hosted by the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles, was held on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at the Zenshuji Temple in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. The speech contest was divided into the Elementary Lower Division, Elementary Upper Division, Special Recommendation, Junior High School Division, and Senior High School Division, with 53 participants and approximately 130 attendees this year.

This Japanese language speech contest contributes towards greater awareness and understanding of Japan, and aims to further expand study of Japanese language amongst younger generations. The speech contest has a core participation from the Japanese American youth community, and it helps to boost these young people’s interest in pursuing the study of Japanese language and its culture.

This year Consul Kobayashi participated from the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles. Consul Kobayashi shared words of encouragement in brief remarks to the participants, and presented an award to a contest participant. JET Program and MEXT Scholarship pamphlets were also distributed at the contest venue by the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles.
