JETs Depart
for Japan!  Eager for adventure,
the new JET recruits will depart for Japan from
Los Angeles on July 24. Once there, they will
disperse to cities and regions all around Japan to
serve as assistant language teachers in public
schools or international relations coordinators in
local government offices. For more information on

Foreign Affairs Leaders of

Meet
Further enhancing Japan-Mexico relations
since President Calderone's visit to Japan earlier
in 2010, Secretary of Foreign Affairs of
Mexico, Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, visited
Tokyo in early July and met with Foreign Minister
Katsuya Okada to discuss the Japan-Mexico Global
Strategic Partnership and the upcoming U.N.

Student
Environmental Summit in Yokkaichi,
Japan
On July 31 four
middle school students from Long Beach will travel
to Yokkaichi city in Mie prefecture to participate
in an environmental summit. There they will
discuss potential obstacles and preemptive
solutions facing their home cities and the world.
The students were selected through the Long
Beach-Yokkaichi Sister City Association.

Nebuta at Nisei Week
Festival
On August 15, a Nebuta float will join the
Nisei Week Grand Parade for the third time since
2007. This summer's Nebuta will include a main
flagship float, a school of fish presented by the
students of Los Angeles Elementary School, and the

Ceramics of Trace
Fukuhara
 From August 2, Trace
Fukuhara's rustic ceramics and stone sculptures
will be on display at the library of the Japan
Information and Culture Center and in the
adjoining consular lobby of the Consulate General
of Japan. Photographs by his brother, Richard
Yutaka Fukuhara, are currently on exhibition at
the Consulate in a series called "Tapestries of
Nagoya."  |
