On June 20, Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles Harry H. Horinouchi visited the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) to present certificates and commemoratives from the Government of Japan to UCSB Professor Shuji Nakamura, recipient of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics.
The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Professor Nakamura, “for the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources.”
Meeting with Professor Nakamura, Consul General presented him with commemorative from Japan: a certificate and glass clock from the Diet’s Lower House, a certificate and vase from the Diet’s Upper House, the Prime Minister’s certificate and silver photo frame from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Professor Nakamura accepted the items and expressed his gratitude.
Professor Nakamura obtained a degree in electronic engineering from the University of Tokushima in 1977, followed by a master’s degree in the same field two years later. He subsequently joined Nichia Corp., later obtaining a Ph.D. in engineering at the University of Tokushima. Leaving Nichia in 1999, Professor Nakamura joined the UCSB’s Materials Department in 2000.
