The Consulate General of Japan, Los Angeles hosted a welcome Reception for 106 Japanese high school students from six different schools participating in the KAKEHASHI Project –The Bridge for Tomorrow- youth exchange program. The reception was held at the Japanese American National Museum in the George & Sakaye Aratani Central Hall.
The event began with welcome remarks from Deputy Consul General Suga and Dr. Greg Kimura, President & CEO of the Japanese American National Museum. Following which the reception program featured presentations by Izumi High School and Odate Homei High School students. These student groups introduced the history of ninja and samurai, and discussed the Japanese spirit, as found in the concept of “mottainai”, the importance of expressing respect for others, and the indomitable character of Japanese people following the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011.
Representatives from many Japan-U.S. related organizations, hosts for KAKEHASHI Project participant visits, and past participants in youth exchange programs were amongst the distinguished guests for the evening.
The KAKEHASHI Project –The Bridge for Tomorrow- youth exchange program is promoted by the Japanese Government, and involves a two-way exchange between Japan and the U.S. The initiative includes groups comprised of middle, high school, and post secondary students who engage in fully funded short-term study tours. This project aims towards revitalizing Japan’s economy by promoting potential interest in and increasing visitors to Japan. At the same time it also hopes to advance global understanding of Japan’s strengths and values, as well as promote the country’s attractions, including Cool Japan. Through this program, it is expected that participants will gain experience that will help them grow to become a new generation of internationally-minded citizens; and that it will contribute towards the advancement of Japan-U.S. relations.
