The Japan Society of San Diego and Tijuana held its 19th Annual Leadership Awards Gala on January 24th, 2013 at the San Diego Marriott, Del Mar. Joe De Rosa, President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Tijuana, Kotaro Nakamura, Professor at San Diego State University, and Dennis Otsuji, President of the Japanese Friendship Garden were honored for making outstanding efforts to promote goodwill and advance business, civic, educational and cultural exchange and understanding between the Japan and the area of San Diego and Tijuana.
The Consul General of Mexico in San Diego, The Honorary Consul General of Japan in San Diego and the Honorary Consul General of Japan in Baja California were in attendance, and the Mayor of San Diego, Bob Filner, addressed the audience. Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles, Jun Niimi delivered an address highlighting the strong and diverse ties between Japan and the greater San Diego area. He thanked the many individuals and organizations around the region for their great assistance in the many events that help build and maintain connections with Japan. The coach and players of the youth baseball exchange delighted the audience with details of their enjoyable trip to Japan.
More than 250 people attended the sit-down dinner and awards presentation and bid on dozens of silent auction items donated by sponsors and organizations around the region.
