Under the new sister city directional signpost, two cherry trees were dedicated to plant on the grounds of the Los Angeles Convention Center on March 27, 2012. The gift of cherry trees was made to the City of Los Angeles from Los Angeles Nagoya Sister City Affiliation (LANSCA). The trees were obtained through the Huntington Botanical Gardens cherry tree planting project commemorating the 2012 Japan – U.S. Cherry Blossom Centennial. Councilmember Tom LaBonge officiated at the event.
Consul General Jun Niimi illustrated that caring for trees is like tending our friendship:
Today’s dedication is a wonderful way to commemorate the past and look to the future. As we water and care for these cherry trees, let’s do the same with our friendship, growing deep roots and producing beautiful blossoms together. I hope that in the next 100 years they will grow ever stronger and more beautiful. And may their success represent the special relationship between Japan and Los Angeles in particular.
