Little Tokyo Music Festival
J-POP, jazz, rock, and taiko groups, including Random Ninjas, Yerak, and the Japan America Chamber Ensemble will perform at the Little Tokyo Music Festival.  The festival at JACCC's Noguchi Plaza on July 7 is held to show appreciation for support and to request continued support for recovery efforts of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

U.S. and Japan Complete Successful Field Trial of Methane Hydrate Production Technologies! 
On the ocean floor are massive deposits of semi-solidified methane, formed by low temperatures and high pressure. Harvesting these non-conventional natural gas deposits is an area of mutual keen interest and joint cooperation by Japan and the United States. If successfully exploited, methane hydrates may exceed the energy content of all other fossil fuels combined! Read about these joint efforts:

 In 2011, a team of researchers led by Imai Makoto, won the Ig Nobel prize in chemistry for their development of a wasabi fire alarm. The Ig Nobel prize has been awarded as an international prize "for achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think."

2012 Image of Japan
The results of the opinion poll "Image of Japan in the United States of America" are in.  Results are favorable, with 84% of the American public perceiving Japan as a dependable ally and 90% among opinion leaders.  80% of the general public and 89% of opinion leaders viewed cooperation between Japan and the U.S. as "excellent" or "good." Read the poll results.

JAS GALA Dinner
The Japan America Society of Southern California hosted its GALA dinner on June 15 and celebrated its 103 anniversary. The event honored the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the United States Forces of Operation Tomodachi and the Disneyland Resort.  Consul General Niimi attended the event.

Celebrating Sakura: Japanese Music for Clarinet Choir
Inspired by the exhibition Lessons of the Cherry Blossom: Japanese Woodblock Prints, the Los Angeles Clarinet Choir offers a springtime-themed concert of classical music and arrangements by contemporary Japanese composers.  June 29 at the Norton Simon Museum.

Tanabata Sake Night 
2010 Spring KunshoThe Tanabata Night Sake Tasting event on July 7 will include more than 40 kinds of Japanese premium sake, premium beer and premium shochu. Japanese appetizers will be served along with beverage selections.  This event is organized by Social Sake Club and supported by Sushi and Sake magazine.

Fuzjko Hemming Piano Concert
A charity concert to raise funds for disaster relief from last year's earthquake in Japan will be held on July 5 at 8:00 pm at the Walt Disney Hall. This solo piano concert by Fuzjko Hemming is part of a U.S.A. concert tour. For more information about the event, please visit the website.

Call For Short Film Submissions

The Japan Film Society will hold its second annual LA EigaFest with American Cinematheque in December.  There is call for short films to compete for the Golden Zipangu Award.  The winning film will be screened at the film festival.  Submission deadline is July 31, 2012.  See their website for requirements.
