 This month, His Majesty Emperor Akihito will celebrate his 77th birthday. Celebrations will be held by Japanese diplomatic posts throughout the world, and the Imperial Palace will hold a visit for the general public on December 23.  The Emperor ascended to the throne on January 7, 1989 as the 125th Emperor of Japan. Tradition and Perfection in a Glass - Sake! 
sake Sake is the national beverage of Japan. The nation's long tradition of  honoring regional 

differences  in waters, soil, and living patterns is reflected in the many varieties of sake. Twenty kinds of sake were presented to consulate guests at the reception celebrating His Majesty's birthday. Look for premium sake varieties at retailers and restaurants throughout the U.S.! Calligraphy by Isa Hiranocalligraphy  
Observe Isa Hirano's Daiji-sho style dramatic calligraphy perfomance on December 7 presented by the Nibei Foundation's Japan Study Club. Hirano's artwork consists mostly of single Chinese characters drawn in ink on paper.

Frolicking Monkeys and Frogs! 
Sumi-e
Charming old school manga of frogs, monkeys, and other critters will be jumping at the exhibition. Artist Hirokazu Kosaka displays his work in two styles of sumi-e at JACCC from Dec. 9-23.

Robots that Really Take Care of Business! 
robots Japan's government announced its award-winning new robots for 2010!  They are out in the field, building cars, inspecting high-voltage power lines and processing meat - freeing humans from these tedious, difficult, and sometimes dangerous jobs.  See the award winners here:  Robots

Response to North Korean Actions 
FM Maehara Foreign Minister Maehara strongly condemned the latest attack by North Korea on the island of Yeonpyeong and held telephone talks with Secretary of State Clinton and the Foreign Ministers of the Republic of Korea and the People's Republic of China.  A Japan-U.S.-ROK Foreign Ministers meeting is scheduled for December 7 in Washington DC.

The baby seal robot Paro is visiting Los Angeles! Paro celebrated H.M. Emperor Akihito's birthday by charming guests at the reception hosted by the Japanese Consulate.  Next month Paro will visit professors and researchers as well as residents of Keiro Retirement Home with inventor Dr. T. Shibata.

Felice Beato: A Photographer on the Eastern Road

Felice Beato's photography career covered one of the widest geographical areas -from the Middle East to Southeast Asia.  At his studios in Yokohama, Japan, he photographed Japanese people in the 18th century. On Dec. 7, this historic exhibition will open at the Getty.link icon
