The universe's first (or at least, first that humans know of...) hybrid solar sail uses both photon propulsion (being pushed forward by the pressure of sunlight) and extremely thin photovoltaic film (generating electricity and ultimately powering ion-propulsion engines). Not science fiction.  Japan technology fact.  Currently hundreds of thousands of miles away from earth and cruising nicely towards Venus.

Foreign Minister's Message on the JMSDF Visit to San Diego

Minister of Foreign Affairs Katsuya Okada released a congratulatory message on the upcoming visit of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Training Squadron's visit to San Diego. An opinion poll of United States citizens on their impressions of Japan was conducted by the Gallup Organization.  In this poll, commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and conducted regularly since 1960, the 2010 positive results followed a trend similar to last year's.  link icon
