Scholarships

Japanese Government Japanese Studies Scholarships are for undergraduates who want to study Japanese language and culture at a university in Japan. Previous Japanese language study is required at the time of application.

Qualifications

  1. Nationality: Applicants must be nationals of the country to which the scholarships are offered.
  2. Age: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and less than 30 years of age as of September 1, 2000
  3. Academic Background: (a) Applicants must be enrolled as undergraduate students in a university outside Japan at the time when they come to Japan and must be enrolled in the home institution at the time when they return to their home countries. (b) Applicants must be students who are studying the Japanese language, culture or a closely related field as a major at their university. A student who is a minor in one of these fields may also apply, but he/she must indicate this on the application form.
  4. Japanese Language: Applicants must have good knowledge of the Japanese language.
  5. Health: Applicants must have no infectious disease. In view of expected psychological burden due to cultural and environmental changes, mental as well as physical health is an essential prerequisite.
  6. Arrival in Japan: Applicants must be able to leave for and arrive in Japan in early September or October, 2000.

 

Term of Scholarship

The term of scholarship is one year, from September or October, 2000 to August or September, 2001.

 

Scholarship Benefits

  1. Allowance: 142,500 yen (in FY1998) per month will be given to each grantee during the term of scholarship.
  2. Transportation: The grantee will be supplied with a tourist class air ticket to and from Japan.
  3. Arrival Allowance: The sum of 25,000 yen will be given to the grantee upon arrival.
  4. Field Study Allowance: An allowance will be given to the grantee for use in field work in Japan ( the amount will be decided by Monbusho).
  5. School Fees: Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation and tuition at universities will be exempted.
  6. Accommodations: Grantees may reside at Foreign Student Houses or Residence Halls at national universities. Those who are not able to find university housing, will have to live in private boarding houses or apartments. Grantees living in private housing may receive subvention for part of the room rent.
  7. Medical Expenses: Students may receive subvention for part of the medical expenses in Japan.

 

Japanese Studies Program

Placement: Placement of grantees to universities will be made by the Monbusho after consultation with the universities concerned. No objection shall be made regarding university placement.

Instruction: All instructions are given in the Japanese language.

Courses of Japanese Studies: (a) A course basically designed to develop one's Japanese language ability with supplementary study of life and culture of Japan. (b) A course basically designed to study life and culture of Japan with supplementary instruction in the Japanese language. The content of study in each course varies for each university. In addition to the study of the Japanese language and special lectures on life and culture of Japan, each student will be able to take undergraduate courses related to his/her major field of study.

A grantee is classified as a non-degree student, but he/she will get a certificate after completing the required course at the university. All questions regarding transfer of credits should be directed at each applicant's university's admissions office.

Application Procedure

The application deadline for the 2000 Japanese Studies Scholarship will be on April 10, 2000. The exam and interviews are tentatively scheduled for April 27, 2000.

Applicants must submit the following documents to the Japanese Consulate by the application deadline:

1.Application for Admissions (prescribed forms) 2 originals
2.Application Annex (prescribed forms) 1 original
3.Photographs of passport size 3
4. Certified student registration from the university currently enrolled 1 original, 1 copy
5. Certified academic records at university 1 original, 1 copy
6.Reference from the university president, dean or academic advisor 1 original, 1 copy
7.Medical certificate (prescribed form) 1 original, 1 copy
