Introduction
To date, some 92,000 students from approximately 160 countries and regions around the world have studied in Japan under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program established in 1954. As of May 1, 2011, there were 9,396 foreign students studying in Japan as Japanese government scholarship students.
The Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles accepts application for Japanese government scholarships from candidates who are U.S. citizens and reside or attend universities in Southern California and Arizona ONLY. For our Information Brochure, please click here .

Attention Scholarship Applicants:
All application procedures for Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships are conducted through Japanese embassies/consulates in participating countries or through institutions of higher education in Japan.
There is no fee to apply.
Please be aware that there is currently a scam in which Japanese government scholarship applications have been solicited through third party websites requiring an application fee. Please note that organizations or individuals who charge application fees have no relation with the Japanese Government.
