A Brief Background of Japan's Educational System

Japan's educational system is readily understood by Americans. Pre-school, K-12, junior colleges, vocational schools, universities, graduate programs, and advanced research opportunities characterize elementary, lower secondary, upper secondary, and higher education just as they do in the U.S. Japan has well in excess of a 99% literacy rate and world renown science achievement. Recently American and Japanese educators have been studying each other's techniques to improve their own systems. Universities are home to not only excellent educational opportunities but to the full range of student activities: sports, bands, clubs, and so on. Public education is directed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho) (www.mext.go.jp). Private schools exist at all levels, and include many language institutes.
