Please note:

All applications must be RECEIVED at the Embassy of Japan by the deadline, with no exceptions.

Applicants MUST send all parts of the application together, in one envelope. Items sent separately (e.g. letters of recommendation, transcripts) will NOT be accepted.

When beginning the application process, please familiarize your self with the important information in the “Before You Begin” and the "Required Documents and Supplemental Materials” sections of the application page (see link above).
 

 

FAQs

Q: What if I don’t know Japanese?
A: It is not a requirement for the ALT position. (However, CIRs must be fluent. We suggest at least a Level 2 on the JLPT.)
Q: Do I have to be graduated before I apply?
A: No, however you must graduate with either a BA/BS by July 1st.
Q: Do I need teaching or ESL Certification?
A: No, it’s not a requirement.
Q: How many people get accepted?
A: That depends on the number vacancies and other factors. Usually, the acceptance rate is about 1:4.

(Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Imperial, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties)
