Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles

 On Monday, April 15, 2013, the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles conferred on Mr. Tatsushi Nakamura, president of the board of directors of Beikoku Shodo Kenkyukai, the Commendation of the Consul General. 
The commendation is conferred on individuals or organizations promoting mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and foreign nations, in support of a consulate general’s mission. 

Mr. Nakamura’s biography and achievements are as follows.   

1. Biography

Mr. Tatsushi Nakamura was born in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, in 1935.  After graduating from high school, he moved to the United States and earned a B.A. in Business Administration at Pasadena Nazarene College (currently: Point Loma Nazarene University).  Following three years at Sumitomo Bank, he started a hotel business with his wife and became the President of Nikkei Hotel Apartment Association in 1976.  Through strengthening his network with his business associates, he started to build deeper cooperation within the Japanese community in Los Angeles.  In gratitude for the continuous support by the regional community, especially the Japanese community, he has been active in many volunteer organizations including the calligraphy field and has contributed to spreading Japanese culture and nurturing youth.

2. Achievements

Beikoku Shodo Kenkyukai was established in 1965 to promote Japanese calligraphy in the United States. The Kenkyukai  has held a number of caligraphy exhibits and has opened its door widely not only to Japanese Americans but also to local young people of various backgrounds, which contributes to the  internationalization of calligraphy and the spreading of Japanese culture.
Mr. Nakamura has been the board member for over fifteen years and currently the president of the board of directors for four years. He has contributed greatly to introducing and sharing Japanese calligraphy throughout the United States.
